News: Elderly woman killed when van struck by sliding trailer on Highway 9

VAN BUREN COUNTY, AR – An accident on a highway in Van Buren County Friday killed an elderly driver, reports KTLO.

The incident took place on Arkansas Highway 9 north of Shirley at about 1 p.m.  Arkansas State Police said the driver of an 18-wheeler was negotiating a curve, and when he applied his brakes the truck’s trailer slid across the center line of the roadway.  A van driven by 80-year-old Darla Furrer was headed in the opposite direction and collided with the front axle of the trailer.

Furrer, a Mountain View resident, was taken to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock where she was pronounced dead.  The driver of the 18-wheeler, whose name was not released, was not injured.  State troopers said the road was wet at the time of the crash.
